WhatsApp is one of the most popular apps in the country. Since its launch, the free chat app has been a success in Brazil and is still widely used by users. However, a piece of news could shake up the use of this tool, which is so important for the daily lives of Brazilians.
The app may stop working on several devices, according to major news sites, causing thousands of people to lose access to it. To better understand what will change, continue reading.
Will WhatsApp stop?
Starting this Monday (31), WhatsApp may stop working on 35 phone models due to a lack of mandatory updates. Owners of these devices will have to find alternatives, such as using a new messaging app or changing phones.
Phones older than Android 4.1 and iOS 12 may no longer support WhatsApp properly. The list of affected devices includes models from manufacturers such as Apple, Samsung, LG, and Huawei, as well as other popular brands on the market.
Among the affected models, LG is the brand with the least support, with a total of 15. One tip to gain more usage time is to disable the WhatsApp automatic updates. Achei Celular was unable to contact WhatsApp, but some users are already reporting problems with access.
Reasons and explanations
Every year, WhatsApp checks which operating systems Messenger is compatible with. Older devices with outdated software often lose security features and the ability to run new app tools.
Therefore, Meta will drop support for these phones. The company also says that the process is important so that resources can be directed to supporting the latest systems.
WhatsApp notifies users when it stops supporting certain devices. Messenger sends in-app notifications and some system update notifications. Users then decide whether to download the latest system or lose access to messages.
Supported systems
WhatsApp currently supports the following operating systems:
- Devices running Android 4.1 or lower operating system
- iPhone with iOS 12 or later
- Devices running KaiOS 2.5.0 or later, including JioPhone and JioPhone 2
By the way, devices that are not on this list can be blocked on WhatsApp for technical reasons or hampered by limitations of some application tools.
Meta made it clear that starting October 24, 2023, WhatsApp will only support Android 5.0 and above. However, there was no mention of changes coming into effect on July 31.
Another important detail is that the app only works if your phone is capable of receiving SMS or phone calls during the verification process. A device with only Wi-Fi cannot create a new account.
