Find out what the leaks say about Huawei's new foldable phone. See what the phone will look like.
So far, China’s biggest smartphone makers have only launched one foldable device. Now, the new priority for brands will be to produce devices in different price segments. For example, in November last year, the Huawei Pocket S emerged as one of the most affordable foldable devices on the market.
A new leak suggests that Huawei is considering a foldable device with entry-level specs. Read on to learn more about the device.
Cheaper folding?
According to specialist Revegnus, the Huawei brand is researching a low-cost foldable device that could belong to the Pocket series. It mentioned that the phone will launch in the first half of 2024 and will cost around $735 (~R$3,720). However, it is unclear whether this figure refers to the Chinese or global market.
In terms of design, the device will come in different colors, just like the Huawei Pocket S. However, Revegnus also mentioned another interesting piece of information: Samsung would be developing a similar device. In August, Revegnus mentioned that the Korean company was testing a new foldable device called the “Galaxy Z FE”. The foldable screen will be introduced with the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 in August 2024. As the name suggests, the Galaxy Z FE should hit the market as a more affordable option, just like other devices with the same name.
Recently, the Korean company officially launched the Galaxy S23 FE, Galaxy Tab S9 FE, and Galaxy Buds FE earbuds.
Huawei Nova 12
Huawei is gearing up to launch a new mid-range smartphone under the Nova series in the Chinese market. These devices are expected to launch as the Huawei Nova 12 and Huawei Nova 12 Pro. Under the hood, they could be powered by the Chinese manufacturer's Kiri chipset. A new leak on Weibo has revealed the key specifications of the device.
Tipster Moorish Sky has brought a poster that reveals some of the specifications of the Huawei Nova 12 series. Internally, the Huawei Nova 12 Pro will come with the Kiri 9000S platform, powering devices like the Huawei Mate 60, Mate X5, and MatePad Pro 13.2. The Huawei Nova 12 will use the mid-range Kiri 830 platform.
In terms of power, the standard model is expected to have a 4,800mAh battery and support for 88W fast charging, while the Pro variant could come with a 4,900mAh battery and 100W charging. In terms of photography, the Huawei Nova 12 is expected to feature a 50-megapixel main sensor with 8-megapixel and 12-megapixel secondary sensors.
The Huawei Nova 12 Pro could come with two 50-megapixel sensors and a 12-megapixel sensor. For selfies and video calling, the duo will have a 60-megapixel front-facing sensor that supports 4K video recording, with the Pro variant featuring an additional sensor. Finally, the Huawei Nova 12 series will support two-way satellite connectivity.
Honnor joins the company against Apple
After the launch of the new Honor Magic Vs 2, the company's CEO, Zhao Ming, decided to comment on the situation of the smartphone market in China. For operators, Apple must innovate more to maintain its relevance in the country. Indeed, the return of new smartphones Huawei and Honor will “put pressure” on the US company’s market share. The space for Apple to gain market share leadership will be increasingly limited.
Ming also pointed out that smartphone sales in China are growing again, which is a great opportunity for many local companies. When asked about the relationship between Huawei and Honor, Ming decided not to discuss it. For him, companies have to compete with each other in the Chinese market, but this is positive for innovation. “The iPhone 15 series does not bring any innovation, but I expect the iPhone 16 series to have significant changes next year,” he said.
Finally, Ming criticized his competitors' strategy of always releasing something just to maintain success. In other words, a product without any real change.
