Manufacturers are looking to match Apple's sales figures in a short time frame, which can be a difficult task.
South Korean tech giant Samsung has been looking to bounce back from recent crises and is investing in foldable phones in order to increase sales worldwide. The brand, which is one of the leading smartphone manufacturers, recently launched two foldable models, which feature high technology and are part of the brand's premium line.
The company aims to reach Apple's sales figures in five years, and is betting on the iPhone 15, which is expected to be launched in the coming months and is already considered the most expensive device ever sold by the brand, even though it hasn't even been launched yet. According to them, the expectation is that the model should surpass the sales figures of its predecessor, the iPhone 14.
Samsung's plans, however, are not easy, but the company aims to work towards this. Will it succeed? Find out all the details of the manufacturer's decision and how it will achieve this goal!
Sales
Samsung is increasingly confident that it has the ability to overtake Apple in premium smartphone sales within five years. The confidence came from the head of the company's Mobile Experience division, TM Roh, who believes that the mark can be achieved through the brand's foldable phones.
At a press conference held at the company's Seoul office, Roh expressed optimism about the future of the brand's foldable devices. He also predicted that global sales of these devices will surpass sales of Samsung's flagship devices in 20%, later this year in 2023.
The CEO also shared statistics about the brand's foldable devices, stating that one in every three premium Galaxy smartphones sold in Korea will be a foldable model. The category is expected to account for over 20% of all Galaxy smartphone sales.
Numbers
Despite Roh's optimism, Samsung needs to recover from recent numbers to achieve its goal. Apple has already told its suppliers to prepare between 84 and 89 million units of the iPhone 15 still for this year. Meanwhile, sales of the Galaxy S23, one of Samsung's bets, have not yet reached even 50% of the number expected by Apple.
Samsung also faces other issues that could prevent it from reaching Apple's numbers. One of them is the price of the devices. While the starting price of the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is seen as affordable, the price of the Galaxy Z Fold 5 is much higher and this could limit the total shipments of both devices during the year. Both models were newly released by the company.
However, this is not seen as a big problem for Roh. For him, as the technology matures, the company will be able to adjust prices and increase sales. But even with the adjustments, the goal of overtaking Apple within a period of five years may be difficult and very ambitious. This is due to the fact that Samsung sells more smartphones per year than Apple, but this is due to entry-level and mid-range devices. The company's premium phones have not yet become as popular as iPhones. Samsung hopes that this reality will change by focusing entirely on foldable models, the company's main bet at the moment.
