“Comet” could be Google’s new follow-up

The site analyzed the APK and discovered a phone codenamed Comet that features the Pixel Flip and could be a successor to the Pixel Fold or something like that. According to 9to5Google, the source code for the latest update to the Pixel Buds app on the Play Store reveals a new Pixel device codenamed Comet.

Judging by the title, it’s safe to say that this isn’t one of the phones that will be announced on October 4. As a reminder, the Pixel 8 was codenamed “Shiba” and the Pixel 8 Pro was known as “Husky,” which are interestingly two different dog breeds. Since this new phone’s codename is Comet, that suggests something completely different from the segment.

Other rumors suggest that the upcoming Pixel 9 series will be codenamed Reptilian, suggesting that the Comet will also not be among the next-generation flagship models. It seems that the Comet will also not be part of the annual release cycle.

If we look at the source code for the Pixel Buds, Comet, and Felix devices, they are grouped together. For those who don't remember, the second one is the codename for the Pixel Fold, confirming the fact that the first one is a foldable device. This could mean that Google is already developing a new foldable device, but it will be a Pixel Flip, not the Fold. In other words, it will compete with devices like the Galaxy Z Flip series, Motor Razr and TECNO Phantom V Flip. There is a strong possibility that this will happen, but so far Google has not commented on this rumor. For now, we can only wait for new information.

Pixel Launch Event

Google has a big announcement event this Wednesday, and we all know by now that the company will be announcing the Pixel 8 series. Information about the smartphone has been popping up in various rumors and leak channels for several months now.

Sources with access to Google executives have revealed that these excessive leaks have angered many within the company. One possible solution to this problem could be to move production of the new line from Vietnam to India.

It's worth remembering that the latest leak features an unboxing video showing everything that comes in the Pixel 8 box and the final design of the device. In other words, Google has practically nothing to show at Wednesday's (4) event.

Data breaches and leaks are already part of the tech market culture, but Google's situation is already an anomaly, making it an "exceptional case." This is because practically everything was leaked before the company's event. In the case of the Pixel 7, it was even worse because some consumers were able to acquire prototypes of the device before the event.

In this case, Google was forced to remotely lock the phone to prevent further problems. The search giant is currently not commenting on the matter. Still, sources say today's unboxing leak came straight from the assembly plant. Pixel 8, and everything points to this being the “last straw” for the company.
