According to recently leaked information, Samsung may be working on a new high-end image sensor for the cameras of its most advanced smartphones. According to the information released by leaker RGcloudS on X, the former Twitter, the brand's new component will stand out for its compact size, leaving more free space inside the phones.

The informant said this Friday (13) that this sensor will be launched in the ISOCELL “GN” series and will have a resolution of 50 MP. One highlight is its compact size of 1/1.57 inch, being much smaller than the Sony IMX989 sensor, for example, which measures 1 inch.

New sensor

Smaller image sensors tend to have lower power retention capacity per pixel, which means they may not have the best dynamic range, as their data storage capacity is compromised by the limited space. Larger sensors, such as the Sony IMX989, are more powerful in this regard.

The leaker also claims that the South Korean company's new ISOCELL GN sensor will have a charge retention capacity per pixel of 10,000, which is in line with the Sony IMX989, despite being more compact than it. This means that the device will be able to capture more light and detail, resulting in sharper and more vibrant images.

Announcement

Despite its smaller size, the sensor will be able to offer the same power retention per pixel as the ISOCELL HP2, making it a worthy rival to the largest image sensors for smartphone cameras available on the market. Other features of the sensor will include improved autofocus capabilities and 1 μm pixels.

Launch

The leaker also believes that Samsung's new image sensor will make its debut on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 in 2025. The numerical order of the foldable phone may be confusing, as the Z Fold 5 arrived in August of this year, and with that, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 would only debut in 2026. However, rumors indicate that the manufacturer intends to skip number 6 in 2024.

According to RGcloudS, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 will be the successor to the Galazy Z Fold 5, and a “Galaxy Z fold 6” will not hit the market. This decision by the company may be made because of a major technological leap that it is planning for its most expensive foldable smartphone, causing it to skip a generation. However, no other source has confirmed this information from the leaker.

Another device that should receive the new ISOCELL GN sensor will be the Samsung Galaxy S26, scheduled to be launched only in 2026. For now, the manufacturer should continue to focus on very high-resolution sensors for its most advanced cell phones, such as the Galaxy S24 Ultra, which should retain the 200MP main camera of the Galaxy S23 Ultra. The Galaxy S24 Ultra is expected to launch only early next year, and should reach users with Android 14, Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, which is faster than the Galaxy S23 Ultra, launched this year, and with a 200 MP main camera, in addition to a 50 MP periscopic sensor and 5X zoom.
