How to make an international call

Have any of your closest relatives or friends moved to another country? Do you work in a company that requires you to contact customers outside of Brazil? Then you have certainly experienced the difficulties of trying to call abroad.

Just like calls made via DDD (Direct Distance Dialing), made between different Brazilian states and cities, international calls are made differently than regular calls. It is not enough to know the cell phone or landline number, you need to include other numbers so that you can contact the desired person.

Making a call to another country, however, is not the same as calling another state. In these cases, you simply need to include the operator's number and the code for the city to which you are calling. So, if you want to call someone in another country, you need to learn how to do it.

How to call another country

To make an international call, you need to find out the DDI number, which is the International Direct Dialing code for the country you want to call. In addition to this number, you need to know a series of other numbers in order to make the call.

Just like the Brazilian states, each country has its own DDI code. Therefore, to make an international call, you need to know the number corresponding to the country you intend to call.

If you've ever received a call from someone you want to contact, you can see their international caller ID code in the international caller ID list on your phone. It's easy to recognize. It's the number that comes right after the plus symbol.

If you have the WhatsApp app on your cell phone, it is very likely that you have already saved someone's contact with “+55” before the number. This is the code for the Brazilian international dialing code. Those who are in another country and want to make a call to a number within Brazilian territory need to dial these two numbers before the phone number.

Be aware, however, that the DDI code is not always the only number that needs to be entered before the telephone number. In some countries, it is also necessary to include the code for the region where the person you wish to speak to is located.
