WhatsApp is testing a new feature that promises to bring innovation to video calls. With Meta avatars, users will be able to swap their face for an animated version in a video call.
The new feature is available in version 2.23.19.14 of WhatsApp beta for Android phones, for a limited number of testers. According to the website WABetaInfo, the app's intention is to help protect the privacy of its users. The feature has already been made available for Messenger calls. and Instagram in July of this year.
With the new feature, users can mask their real appearance with the avatar. This way, they will be able to exchange their image for an animated version through the avatars made available by the company.
The app's announcement shows three examples of avatars and a list of what the new feature will make available. When the user chooses to switch, the avatar will imitate the user's movements and expressions in real time, the account accepts a privacy policy and it will be possible to return to regular video at any time. Calls will continue to be protected by end-to-end encryption.
The platform hopes to bring a more fun and personalized feel to video calls, allowing those who don't want to appear to be able to see the other participants, without just being left with a static photo.
The new feature does not yet have a specific date for reaching users of the stable version of the app, as it is still available to a few testers in the beta version. However, it is expected to arrive soon, if everything goes well in the tests.
