The best-selling cell phone in the world
It's been a long time since the world's first smartphones and the technology was still largely unexplored. Nokia brand dominated the market, not only with top-of-the-line models, but also with simpler solutions for domestic and business environments.
In 2003, the first Nokia 1100 appeared. A simple model, without a camera, without all the bells and whistles we have today, but very successful thanks to its affordable price and basic quality of service. It was the best-selling cell phone in the world, with around 250 million units distributed.
In addition to the Snake 2 game, the cell phone was also one of the models called “Nokia Brick”, which included several devices of the time. Resilience was its strong point, in addition to being designed to deal with impacts, it also had to adapt to the most different climates, which was a problem at the time.
Other models have sales records
The “Nokia Brick” actually includes other models, such as the 6110, 3310, and 5120. Some are designed to serve as “landline phones,” while others are intended for business environments. While the Nokia 1100 is the best-selling product in the world, with 250 million units shipped, other models are also on this list. The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus both came in second, with around 225 million devices sold. The Nokia 105 also surpassed 200 million units sold.
Despite many jokes, the Nokia 1100 model has established itself as one of the best-selling cell phones and remains unsurpassed even two decades after its launch.
The 2023 winner
Data from consultancy Omdia shows that the iPhone 14 Pro Max was the best-selling smartphone model in the world between January and June 2023, with 26.5 million units sold. This advantage shows that consumers are willing to spend more on premium phones. Three other Apple devices follow on the list: iPhone 14 Pro (21 million), iPhone 14 (16.5 million) and iPhone 13 (15.5 million). The iPhone 11 2019 came in 10th on the list, with 6.9 million units.
The iPhone 14 Pro Max's leading position contrasts with last year's data. In the first half of 2022, the iPhone 13, the base model in Apple's product line, was the best-selling smartphone in the world. Although it is a top-of-the-line smartphone, it is the cheapest in its segment. Today, consumer preferences have shifted in another direction. The iPhone 14 Pro Max is Apple's most expensive device, with a suggested price of US$1,099 in the United States and R$9,499 in Brazil.
