Nowadays, having a wallet full of physical documents is no longer a necessity. In Brazil, digital versions of most official documents are available and can be easily installed on your smartphone, and are also valid and legally accepted as substitutes for printed documents.

This digital transformation has brought many benefits, such as the convenience of always having documents at hand, avoiding the risk of loss or damage to documents. Most of these digital editions can be obtained as soon as the physical document is released. Some require the use of specialized applications, while others can be integrated with existing government applications, such as the “Document Catalog” on the Gov.Br app. See the documents available in digital version and their respective applications below.

Precautions that need to be taken

Documentation must be available when needed. Digital versions are just as valuable as printed ones, but it’s crucial to ensure they’re accessible when needed, lawyers say. That’s why it’s important to regularly check that the app is up to date and working on your mobile device. Not having access to these documents is the same as not having them at all.

For example, if a driver is unable to access their digital driving license due to a lack of internet connection or if their smartphone runs out of battery during a police check, they may be fined for driving without a proper license. In addition, have a backup. Legal experts say it is important to prepare for possible situations, such as lack of battery or Internet signal, by keeping physical copies or photos as a backup, especially when dealing with authorities.
