Technology allows your cell phone to be used as a card machine to receive payments. Find out how!
Contactless payments have quickly become popular among Brazilians. Among the main in-person credit card transactions carried out in the country in the first half of this year, more than 7 billion used NFC technology, which allows this type of operation, which indicates an increase of 76% compared to the first half of last year.
During the period, according to Abecs, an association representing electronic payment companies, R$$414.8 billion were moved through technology. In June alone, contactless purchases accounted for 48% of card payments. In June 2021, this share was 13%, which clearly demonstrates the strength of technology. In December of this year, the entity estimates that the index will reach 56%.

Contactless payments
For most consumers, speed and convenience are the main attractions of this method, but for entrepreneurs, this convenience translates into increased sales. The potential for businesses is even greater after the possibility of making contactless payments using a cell phone, without a card machine, allowing sales with a card from anywhere and at any time.
This type of payment is a big bet for Mercado Pago, which is a reference in payment solutions for companies. Since April, when it made the technology available to its customers with the Point Tap tool, Mercado Pago has been working to improve it, as there is this growing demand in businesses of all sizes.
Security
Contactless payments are safer for the user, as they do not need to hand over their card to the store attendant and need to be close to the device for the transaction to be made. As with other types of card transactions, the user must be aware of issues such as the amount to be paid at the time of purchase.
Applications
To make this type of payment, users need to register their credit or debit card with one of the payment apps that use the technology. Apple offers the Apple Pay, Google offers Google Pay, Samsung offers Samsung Pay and Cielo offers Cielo Tap, which works in the same way as the service offered by Mercado Pago. The payment apps accept the registration of several card brands.
To find out if your Android phone allows this type of operation, you must access Settings, go to Connections and check. If your phone has this technology, simply activate the “NFC and contactless payments” tab. On Apple phones, users have access to this technology starting with the iPhone 6.
Technology
The main utility of NFC technology is the making of payments digitally, replacing cards. However, the technology can also be used to transfer small amounts of data between two compatible devices.
The technology can also serve as a bridge for two smartphones to exchange links, connection passwords, contacts, messages, photos and videos, along with the device's Bluetooth.
Additionally, NFC can also connect with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Direct to help pair a phone with accessories like cameras, headphones, watches, and more.
