Cell phones and traffic don't mix. Understand the reasons why using a cell phone is prohibited while driving.

The use of cell phones has become so common these days that it is hard to imagine a person who does not own one. However, when used indiscriminately, they can be harmful to both the user and other people on the road.

Phone calls can distract drivers from driving, increasing the risk of accidents. According to the National Registry of Traffic Violations (Renainf), in 2021, around 675 Brazilians put themselves at risk by using this device while driving every day. And even worse, every hour 28 drivers did not pay attention while driving. This means that there was negligence in driving. This confirms one of the main causes of traffic accidents in Brazil.

Cell phone prohibited

In 2021, 246,438 traffic violations were recorded in the country due to the use of cell phone in traffic. Therefore, the Brazilian Traffic Code (CTB) stipulates in a paragraph of article 252 that the driver who holds or handles a telephone while driving commits a very serious offense. The objective of this measure is to limit its use and, thus, reduce the accident rate in road traffic.

To avoid getting into or causing an accident, drivers must remain alert and attentive while driving, eliminate distractions and always focus on driving, the road and the surroundings. In Brazil, using a cell phone while driving results in a fine of 293.47 reais and 7 points on your driver's license.

Set up your GPS before starting your route

If you need to use GPS while driving, try to set your route before the vehicle starts moving. This means drivers can calmly adjust their dashboard devices and continue driving safely.

Do not connect your device to the car dashboard

As shown above, the GPS must be mounted on a suitable mount on the dashboard. However, note that this is the only exception where the smartphone must be visible to the driver. Attaching a cell phone directly to a car's dashboard without using location information can cause notifications to appear on the screen, which can be distracting for drivers.

Keep your cell phone silent

When you hear a beep, you can't help but look at your phone. Message and call notifications can be distracting. Therefore, it is recommended to put your phone on silent or airplane mode. Once you park your car, you will be able to catch up on all the conversations.

Not using your cell phone while driving is a simple but important action that can save lives. This rule also applies to motorcycles, which must follow the same traffic rules as motorcycle drivers, the same rules regarding cell phone use while driving.

As the number of professional motorcyclists has increased (e.g. through delivery apps), the use of smartphones and therefore the risk of accidents has also increased. Many motorcyclists use their mobile phones to check routes, orders, messages and calls. But be careful, do not put your life at risk because of a message.
