Learn how to disable notifications on Android and iOS phones. Check out the tutorial.

If you have a lot of apps installed, frequent notifications can be distracting and take up space on your Android screen. In these cases, turning off your phone’s notifications can be a great way to reduce distractions and focus on important messages or notifications.

Android offers two ways to turn off notifications for an app: from the recent notifications list or from the device settings. You also have the option to customize notifications so that you only receive notifications from specific apps that you have installed. On the iPhone, the features are a little more limited. See how to turn off notifications on your phone below.

  • A key will appear next to the application name in the open tab.

How to disable using Android settings

  • Open your phone’s settings and tap on the “Notifications” option. This will display a list of recently used apps on Android.
  • Tap the switch to turn off notifications.
  • Then, tap on each app's name to access additional options.
  • Then, uncheck the “Show notifications” box or check the option to enable alerts only for certain situations.

This procedure is performed in the Samsung smartphone Galaxy S20 Fe, but you will need to follow the same steps on other Android devices as well.

Silent and alert notifications

Android has two types of notifications between apps: alert or silent. In the first case, the device emits a sound or vibrates, displays a message on the lock screen, and places the app icon in the status bar at the top of the screen.

Silent notifications do not send notifications with sound or vibration. Swipe down from the top of the screen to check which mode your phone is in. If you don't want to turn off app notifications but don't feel you need them, you can switch to silent mode. To do this, tap and hold the notification and select this option.

Disabling on iPhone

You can disable the app notifications on your iPhone in your smartphone’s settings. In other words, it prevents certain apps from sending you notifications. However, if you don’t want to disable this feature completely, you can configure permissions on a per-app basis. This means adding or removing sounds and choosing how they appear on the lock screen or in the notification center. Follow our step-by-step instructions and learn how to turn off app notifications on your iPhone.

  • Access your iPhone’s “Settings.” Open the Settings section of your smartphone and tap “Notifications.”
  • Now, in the ‘Notification Style’ section, select the apps from which you don’t want to send notifications. Then, turn off the “Allow Notifications” option.

Configure notification permissions

On the other hand, if you don't want to completely block an app from sending you notifications, you can adjust its permissions. The same screen that displays the "Allow notifications" option also has a box that allows you to enable or disable alert types. If you don't want one of the two models to appear, you can uncheck it. A blue check mark will appear when the model is activated. So, when selecting a banner type, you can choose whether you want to send notifications continuously or intermittently.
