By default, WhatsApp always backs up your messages, either on your phone or in the cloud.
You may not be able to recover recent messages, but if you've lost a lot, this procedure is worth it.
However, it is important to always have the backup active in your application. Otherwise, it will not be possible to recover the messages.
Recover messages from Android phones
Check out how to recover deleted WhatsApp messages for those who have the Android operating system.
It works in two different ways: You can restore messages from Google Drive or perform this procedure locally.
Recover via Google Drive
To recover messages from Google Drive, you will need to follow a few steps, as there is no button with the option to restore messages. See our guide below.
- First, go to your cell phone's Settings icon;
- Then click on the Applications option and then on WhatsApp;
- The next step is to click on Storage and Clear data;
- Once this is done, a confirmation window will appear, click Ok;
- After completing the above steps, log back into your WhatsApp and re-enter your number.
Note: Since you cleared the data in settings, the application deleted all saved information, so you need to enter your number again.
Attention: The number must be the same as the previously performed backup, otherwise the process will not work.
- After verifying WhatsApp, the app will automatically start searching for backups.
Note: If this process takes too long, close the application and start the procedure again.
- After analyzing the application, a screen will appear saying “Backup found”;
- Click “Restore”.
Done, you can restore all the messages contained in the backup.
Just like the number, the Google account must also be the same one where the backup was previously made. There is no way to transfer conversations from one account to another.
Recover local backup

- Go to Settings on your phone;
- Then click on “Manage applications”;
- Find the option “WhatsApp Messenger;
- Click on “Options” and then on “Delete hidden app data”.
It is important to perform this step before making a local backup. In the second step, you will need to download a file manager.
First, look for the app on your cell phone. If you can't find it, go to Google Play and download the “File Manager” app.
Follow the third step below:
- Enter the File Manager application;
- Go to the WhatsApp/Databases folder;
- Confirm that the most recent file in the folder (msgstore.db.crypt9) was changed on the date you want;
- If the answer is no, you must modify one of the backups found in the folder, for example: msgstore-YYYY-MM-DD.1.db.crypt9 (always starting with msgstore-YYYY-MM-DD);
- Rename to msgstore.db.crypt9;
- Once done, uninstall WhatsApp and reinstall it again;
- After entering your number again, the application will detect a saved backup;
- Restore the backup and you're done.
Recover messages from IOS cell phones
On iPhones, there is only one way to perform a backup, via iCloud. Before doing this, check if there is an active automatic backup on your iCloud.
To check, just open the WhatsApp application, go to “settings”, then go to “Chats” and click on “Chat Backup”.
If there is no active backup, it will not be possible to recover the messages. It is important that this option is always active, to protect you in future situations.

- First, uninstall WhatsApp and install it again;
- After entering your number, the application will detect that there is a backup saved in iCloud;
- Follow the prompted instructions and recover your messages.
For the process to work, it is important to enter the same backup number in WhatsApp and log in with the same iCloud account.
