Problems with WhatsApp: Here's What to Do

After the last update of WhatsApp, you are facing several issues while using this popular instant messaging app. This is a small drama for you, since you use WhatsApp not only to keep in touch with friends and family but also to organize some business contacts.

Precisely for this reason, you immediately ran to the Internet to find out if the problems you are experiencing concern only your application or if there is a general malfunction of the service. If this is indeed the case, fear not: I am here to help you.

In this guide, in fact, you will find a solution for all problems most common with the WhatsApp and you will be able to understand whether the failures you are experiencing are due to you or to momentary platform outages (sometimes this can happen!). Check out the details below.

Problems with WhatsApp today

If you are having problems with WhatsApp today , it is likely that the detected defects are attributed to a temporary interruption of the WhatsApp servers, your Internet connection or, again, to bugs in the application. Let me explain how to proceed in all these cases.

Check the status of WhatsApp servers

Check WhatsApp Server Status This is one of the first things I recommend you do. By doing so, you will be able to immediately understand whether the source of the problems encountered is a fault on your device or whether the platform's servers are temporarily unusable (in this case, you can only wait for the situation to return to normal independently).

Unlike other applications and/or web services, WhatsApp does not have an official website where you can check the status and operation of its servers. This possibility is only available to Facebook, but interruptions to Facebook servers (which manages WhatsApp) do not always cause problems with WhatsApp.

Check your internet connection

To check also the internet connection It is an operation to be carried out when WhatsApp malfunctions are detected (as it is a platform that works entirely via the Internet).

Checking the internet connection on your Android or iOS device is child's play. If you are connected via Wi-Fi , take a quick look at your device's screen, particularly the top right or left corner.

The number of notches on the Wi-Fi symbol is crucial to determine the quality of your Internet connection. The stronger the signal, the better your connection; conversely, with a weak signal, you may have a limited Internet connection.

Being connected to Wi-Fi, however, does not always mean being connected to the Internet. You may be correctly connected to your router's wireless network, but you do not have access to the Internet due to temporary infrastructure issues with your carrier or an incorrect configuration of the router itself, or perhaps just the smartphone you are using.

To verify this, I recommend you try opening a website from another device connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Are you using WhatsApp through data network from your operator? If this is the case, then under the name of your mobile operator you will see the icon 3G / 4G  or 5G (depending on the type of network used and the device in your possession). If you see the letter AND (edge), there is little or no signal. If the connection problem persists for some time, contact your operator.

Packet data connection depends on the mobile operator and its reception. If you are currently in a place where your cell phone does not receive signal (or receives signal poorly) and you are experiencing problems with WhatsApp, these may be related to the momentary slowness of your Internet connection.

Are you having trouble checking the quality of your Internet connection and are not sure if it is active? You can do a final check through your device's settings, trying to disable and re-enable Wi-Fi or packet data connection. I will explain how to do this now.

Node Android , open the application Settings (the gear symbol you find on the home screen or in the drawer) and locate the section Wireless and Networks , to pay attention to Wi-Fi item . There is the word Disabled ? In this case, tap on it and move the lever OFF to ON to connect to your home Wi-Fi (if your Wi-Fi is already active, first try disabling it and then re-enabling it).

To activate packet data connection, tap the item Data usage that you can see in the app Settings of Android. In Data network, move the lever of OFF to ON (if the connection was already active, try deactivating it and reactivating it using the same lever) and that's it.

If you are using a iPhone , you must open the application Settings (the gray icon with gears on the home screen) and go to the Wi-Fi item . If the lever is moved to OFF , move it to ON to activate this connection (while if the connection was already active, try deactivating it and reactivating it right after).

Even on iOS, you can optionally enable data packet connection to use WhatsApp even when you are not connected to a WiFi network. To do this, go to the app Settings and select the item Cell phone. Then move the switch next to Data from the network cell phone of OFF to CONNECTED (if the connection was already active, temporarily deactivate it and reactivate it later).

Are you able to browse the internet? If the answer is yes, there is no problem with your internet connection. If not, you will not be able to use WhatsApp precisely because of the lack of a proper connection.

Reinstall the application

Are you still having trouble using WhatsApp and think it is a problem related to your application? It could be. Sometimes it happens that during an installation, the application was not updated correctly and some files inside it got corrupted. It is a rare problem, but it can happen.

To resolve this, simply uninstall and reinstall the application on your device in order to perform a “clean” installation. If the problem is related to the application itself, you should be able to solve it by following the procedure below.

Generally speaking, in the Android, to uninstall an application, you must hold your finger on the icon and tap the button (x) , in the item Uninstall or in the item Delete . On the Android smartphone model I used to create this guide, to uninstall an application, simply hold down the icon and drag the icon of the latter to the item Uninstall. The procedure may vary slightly from device to device.

After removing the WhatsApp app, you will need to install it again. To do this, open the Play Store (if you use a smartphone without Google services you can download the application's apk package from the official WhatsApp website), look for “WhatsApp” and after going to the application download screen, press the Click on the button Install and wait for the procedure to complete.

Already in iPhone, locate the WhatsApp icon on the home screen, hold your finger on it and, in the menu that opens, select the item Remove app . Finally, confirm your intentions by clicking on Delete application and Delete .

To reinstall the application, and consequently, update WhatsApp on iOS, open the App Store , press the button To look for (bottom right corner), look for “WhatsApp” through the search bar that appears at the top and, after pressing the correct result, press the button that describes the cloud with arrow pointing down (if necessary, confirm the operation with the Face ID , Touch ID or password Apple ID).

All done? Very good! I recommend that you try launching WhatsApp. If it was a problem related to an “unfortunate” update of the application, the malfunction should have been resolved.

Problems with the WhatsApp application

You are having problems with the WhatsApp application , for example, regarding not receiving notifications or their sounds? Are you facing issues related to your privacy? Let me explain how to act in such cases as well.

Problems with WhatsApp: Audio

Regarding the resolution of audio problems with WhatsApp , these may be due to incorrectly disabling notifications or incorrectly activating silent mode on your device.

Node Android, after opening the WhatsApp , press the button (⋮) (top right corner), go to menu Settings > Notifications and make sure that the lever located next to the word Conversational tones be ON .

Also make sure that silent mode is not activated on the device in use: lower the notifications suspended on Android by swiping down from the top of the screen and, if necessary, tap the icon barred bell or megaphone blocked (If these icons are not crossed out, silent mode is not activated).

Node iPhone , however, after opening the WhatsApp , press the tab Settings (bottom right corner), tap on the items Notifications > Sounds and make sure that None is selected (if it is, choose one of the available sounds to be notified of the arrival of new WhatsApp notifications). Once you go to the screen in question, also make sure that the switches are located in correspondence with the entries Show notifications present in the sections notification messages and notification groups , they are moved to ACTIVATED(if not, move them yourself).

Also, make sure you haven't muted the sound on your “iPhone by”: you should make sure that the physical button on the left side of the device (slightly higher than the volume buttons) is connected (the orange strip indicating that silent mode is activated should not be visible), otherwise move it yourself.

If you have performed all the steps I have just described and despite this you continue to have audio problems with WhatsApp, check that your device does not have hardware problems with the speakers (you can notice if the audio problems concern all applications): if so, you should bring the latter to get assistance to fix it.

WhatsApp issues: privacy

You notice suspicious activity on your WhatsApp account and think it is related to privacy issues ? If you answered yes, I implore you to contact the platform's support team as soon as possible. Here's how you can do that.

  • On Android – after opening WhatsApp, press the button (⋮) (top right corner), select Settings > Help > Contact Us , fill in the field Describe your problem with the description of the problem you had regarding your privacy, use the (+) visible buttons on the screen to possibly insert screenshots describing the thing and tap the button Forward (bottom right). Some articles related to your query will be proposed to you: If none of the answers to your question about privacy, click on the button This doesn't answer my questionand select the email management application you want to use to contact WhatsApp (for example, Gmail , Outlook , etc.). You can complete the action with the application you chose.
  • On iPhone – after launching WhatsApp, tap on the item Settings (bottom right corner) and select the Help items > Contact Us . Then fill in the text field Describe your problem , taking care to describe in detail the issue that concerns you related to privacy and insert the screenshots, by tapping the button (+) located at the bottom. Therefore, press on the item Next (top right corner) and see if among the proposed articles there is one that can be useful for you to solve the problem independently. If not, click on the button Send my question to WhatsApp support and tap the icon arrow (top right corner) and that's it.

Now that you have sent your request for help regarding the privacy issue you have encountered, all you have to do is wait for a response from WhatsApp which, at least I hope, will arrive relatively quickly.

Other problems with the WhatsApp application

There are others problems with the WhatsApp application that you would like to resolve, perhaps related to the use of some of its specific functions?

In this case, I suggest you take a look at all the tutorials I have dedicated to the application: you can find them all in the WhatsApp section of my website. I hope they can be useful to you. I also advise you to contact WhatsApp if you deem it necessary.

Problems with WhatsApp Web

Let's now solve some problems with WhatsApp Web . Basically, you can do two things to try to fix them.

First, try close active sessions and redo the QR Code scanning procedure . See how to proceed.

  • On Android – after opening WhatsApp, press the button (⋮) ( upper right corner), select the item WhatsApp Web and tap on the item Disconnect from all devices . Then press the button (+) located in the upper right corner and frame the QR code visible on the WhatsApp web page opened on the computer.
  • On iPhone – after opening WhatsApp on your “iPhone by”, press the item Settings (bottom right corner), select the WhatsApp Web / Desktop item , tap on the name of an active session and in the new opened screen press the item button Disconnect . Repeat the operation for all other active sessions as well. Then press the button Connect a device , which is present on the screen of WhatsApp Web / Desktop where you were before, authenticate (if necessary) with the Face ID or Touch ID , frame the QR code visible on the WhatsApp web page open on your computer and that's it.

Second, try check your smartphone's internet connection: if the connection is not optimal in the latter, the functioning of WhatsApp Web will be compromised.

Problems with WhatsApp Business

If you came to this guide because you want to solve problems with WhatsApp Business , the version of WhatsApp aimed at companies, can follow all the suggestions I have already given in the previous lines.

The steps I have outlined in this guide, relating to the “classic” version of WhatsApp, can actually also be useful for resolving operational issues related to its version for business users.
