THE PIX, an instant payment system created by the Central Bank of Brazil, has transformed the national financial landscape by enabling fast and secure transfers. Although it has been widely adopted in Brazil, its international expansion still faces significant challenges.
With the aim of facilitating global payments, the Central Bank has started implementing PIX Internacional, which aims to enable instant transactions between countries. The relevance of this system stands out in a context of increasing international mobility and demand for financial solutions that keep up with the globalization of services.
Challenges of International PIX Expansion
Despite the success of PIX in Brazil, its expansion to other countries has proven complex. The main difficulty lies in adapting the system to the different regulations and financial infrastructures in place in the target countries. PIX International is currently available in six countries: Argentina, Chile, the United States, France, Portugal and Uruguay. However, adoption in each of these locations presents unique challenges.
For example, in Colombia, the system faces technical difficulties, such as performance degradation during peak hours. Furthermore, integration with different banking agents and financial platforms in the new countries continues to be a significant barrier.

Innovations and Potential Solutions
To overcome the challenges faced by PIX Internacional, the Central Bank is exploring innovations and improvements to the system. Among the new features are PIX by approximation and PIX automatic, which aim to further facilitate transactions.
PIX by proximity will allow fast payments through NFC technology, similar to what is already used in other payment systems. Automatic PIX, in turn, promises to offer a more efficient payment experience without the need for constant user intervention. Experts such as Laura Alvarenga from FDR point out that these innovations may be the key to solving some of the problems encountered in international expansion.
Future Perspectives and Expansion
The expansion of PIX Internacional to more countries represents a great opportunity for the Central Bank and the global economy.
The successful integration of the system into new markets can facilitate transactions for Brazilians living abroad and encourage the adoption of instant payments on a wider scale. The expectation is that, with the overcoming of current difficulties and the implementation of technological innovations, PIX Internacional will gain more traction and become an essential tool for international financial transactions.
Monitoring improvements and acceptance in countries that have already integrated will be crucial to understanding the evolution and future expansion of the system.
The trajectory of PIX International demonstrates the Central Bank’s ambition to create a globally integrated and efficient payments system. Over time, and as more countries join the system, PIX could establish itself as a robust and innovative international financial solution.
