There’s no denying that foldable smartphones have been a major technological breakthrough, but will these devices sell? Keep reading to see the projections for this market.

Folding market
Samsung President Roh Tae-moon said at a cross-generational presentation last year that foldable devices would account for more than 50% of the company's premium models sold by 2025. In 2021, nearly 10 million foldables foldable smartphones were exported worldwide. This represents an industry-wide growth of over 300% compared to 2020, and this accelerated growth rate is expected to continue.
“We are approaching a point where foldable phones become more common and have a place in the overall smartphone market,” Dr. Roh wrote. Since 2019, when Samsung launched its first foldable model, the Galaxy Fold, 26.1 million foldable smartphones have been sold worldwide. That’s up from 1.7 million that year, 2.8 million in 2020, 5.8 million in 2021 and 15.8 million last year.
According to experts, foldable models are expected to increase by 33.4% compared to 2022, that is, to 18.3 million devices sold in 2023. Samsung holds 70% of this market, followed by Huawei, Motorola, ZTE, LG, Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi, TCL and OnePlus. So far, the best-selling foldables in the world are Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3, Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3, Huawei Mate X2, Motorola Razr 5G and OPPO Find N
Research predicts that 71 million models will be sold by 2025. Reasons that could drive these sales include lower prices, new models, screen durability and growing demand for mobile devices.
Samsung Event
On Wednesday morning, the 26th, Korean company Samsung hosted the most anticipated event of the year, Galaxy Unpacked 2023, in Seoul, South Korea, and announced the brand's main new products for the next season. This is not the only attraction, but once again great expectations are focused on the new Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy Z Fold series, which are lighter and more durable 5th generation foldable models.
Additionally, the company launched two new smartwatches powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 mobile platform and the Galaxy Tab S9. All three product categories, foldable smartphones, smartwatches and tablets, are based on Samsung's new ecosystem.
According to the company, sales of foldable smartphones in the overall market have grown by 2,000 % annually. A big reason for this growth is that Samsung positioned the ZFlip foldable in the US$4T499 (roughly R$$4700) range last year. This puts it in a more affordable position to compete with popular premium devices like the iPhone. It's worth remembering that foldable smartphones have only been around for about five years, but these devices are still attractive.
Artificial intelligence
Samsung also continues to develop its own AI solutions and is openly collaborating with AI companies and developers to leverage and utilize the technology. This is an important step in the company’s quest for technological advancement, which it appears to have as its primary goal in its devices.
