How does the New Scam work?

The stolen or cloned WhatsApp scam is one of the most common and worrying. In this scam, criminals take control of the app, sending urgent messages asking for money to external contacts. They use a cunning strategy, involving a fake survey about the Covid-19 vaccine and other data.

Initially, scammers contact victims, asking them to evaluate the vaccine or participate in a related survey. However, under the pretext of validating this evaluation, they ask them to change the number on their WhatsApp account. This process, hidden from the victim, generates a security code that is sent to the original phone.

The criminals then ask a person to provide this code, claiming it is necessary to validate the survey. Once obtained, they take control of the WhatsApp account and start the scams, demanding money or carrying out other fraudulent actions in the victim's name.
