Rainbow Six Mobile

Recently, the studio announced projects such as Rainbow Six Mobile, The Division Resurgence and Assassin's Creed Jade, promising original plots, mechanics and perfection worthy of versions on other platforms. However, on mobile phones. During the Brasil Game Show 2023, several Ubisoft developers visited Brazil, and answered the question: is mobile finally becoming an attractive platform for professional gamers?

For Justin Swan, creative director of Rainbow Six Mobile, works designed for mobile devices are still developing their own language, but are gradually attracting the attention of audiences on other platforms. The reason is the emergence of big titles on cell phones, with adjustments that take into account the reality of the device, such as touch screens and the optimizations necessary to work on digital devices.

Mechanical challenge

Rainbow Six Mobile is one of the strongest arguments for understanding mobile as a serious platform like any other. The Rainbow Six Siege version offers all the tense and adventurous gameplay of the original, even if the mobile phone is not the ideal place for it. In addition to the touch control, it is necessary to take into account that it is aimed at a much wider and more casual audience. At the same time, the devices themselves are very versatile, combining games, applications for streaming movies and series, messages with friends, work and social networks (and sometimes phone calls). In other words, they all compete for the player's attention.

In fact, the developers’ concern is to take into account that the device performs thousands of other functions in addition to running games. “This is a huge question that took five years of work to answer,” said Justin Swan. “I’ll try to summarize. We needed to improve onboarding because there are more casual gamers on mobile devices than on other platforms, so we needed to introduce them to the world of Siege in a slower, more gentle way.”

The developer then detailed what this entails in practice, as a series of features designed to make gameplay more dynamic and accessible, completely perfect for enjoying in small quantities. Swan claims that this has even inspired game modes in which players are quickly regenerated after death, to ensure that their attention is not stolen in the few minutes between turns. The executive comments that if the user dies at the beginning of the game, they end up having free time to open Twitter, Facebook or even Netflix. “That’s not good for us,” he explains. “We want you to stay in the game, so if you respawn, you have something to do. We need to maintain the risk of death, but ensure that there is something fun to do if you die,” he concludes.

Gamers can only wait and see what the company responsible for so many successes will bring to the world of mobile phones in the coming months. There will certainly be no shortage of innovation and quality.
