Nokia News

Previously, it was common to find smartphones with removable back covers and user-replaceable batteries. However, most phones today are tightly sealed, making repairs difficult without specialized equipment and knowledge.

But this year, HMD is starting to make repairability a differentiator with the new Nokia G310 5G, which will go on sale in the US starting August 24, starting with the Nokia G22 and G42 smartphones for the European market later in 2023.

Cheap and repairable smartphone

The Nokia 310 5G is an entry-level smartphone with a 6.56-inch, 1612 x 720 pixel, 90Hz display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 480+ processor, 4GB of RAM, 128GB of internal storage, and a decent 5000mAh battery. There are three rear cameras, but they're not particularly impressive.

The primary camera features a 50MP sensor and autofocus support, while the other two cameras feature a 2MP depth sensor and a 2MP macro camera. The phone has an 8MP fixed-focus camera on the front. Other features include a USB 2.0 Type-C OTG port, support for WiFi 5 and Bluetooth 5.1, and support for 20W charging.

The Nokia G310 5G features an aluminum chassis, Gorilla Glass 3 covering the display, and an IP52 water and dust resistance rating. It also features stereo speakers, a fingerprint sensor on the power button, and support for face unlock.

The phone also packs a few features you won't find on the more expensive models, including a 3.5mm audio jack and a microSD card reader that supports cards up to 1TB. But the best thing about this handset is that it's part of HMD's line of self-repair devices.

This means you can find genuine parts, repair tools, and repair guides on iFixit for replace batteries, screens, doors and backs.

Other models

The Nokia G310 5G is one of the company's phones in the North American market with this kind of self-repair support. But honestly, it would be nice to see Nokia extend this program to other phones. The new Nokia G310 5G costs $186 and the screen replacement kit costs $155. Many people prefer to fix the broken parts instead of buying a new phone, but it would be more helpful if the company provided parts and repair guides for its more expensive models as well. The Nokia XR21 costs $1500, so replacing the screen is much cheaper than buying a new handset.
