According to research conducted by Cupom Válido in collaboration with Statista and Statcounter, 81% of Brazilian consumers have an Android smartphone and 18% use iOS. In this epic battle between Google's powerful operating system and Apple's impressive legacy operating system, little remains of the others. But they exist.  

According to the same study, around 11% of smartphone users worldwide use an operating system other than Android or iOS. Proportionally, there are few of them on the market, but numerically there are still many. Therefore, we have selected here some alternative mobile software that exists for you to get to know.

Variety of operating systems 

Other mobile operating systems, far beyond the traditional ones Android devices and iOS also have a significant presence in the market, although smaller than the two giants. Check out some of the best alternative systems right now.   

Windows XP  

Eleven years ago, Microsoft released Windows XP for Mobile to bring the Windows XP desktop to mobile devices. The version of Windows built into your phone uses PC software like games and Internet Explorer. The operating system, which powered the ITG xpPhone (xpPhone) and VCP08 (ViewSonic) models, and the PC version, theoretically had everything it was supposed to do, but the operating system was discontinued without widespread support.   

Facebook Home 

In 2013, Facebook attempted to launch a social networking system for smartphones, a different kind of app for replace the system from Google. In this way, Facebook Home creates a switch in the Android interface to always display interactions from the social network, such as messages, likes and news. You can initially download it from the Google Play Store.

Facebook didn't stop there and eventually teamed up with HTC to launch the first HTC phone, called the Facebook Phone.    

KaiOS   

Joining the family of feature phones, KaiOS is designed to be simple and suitable for this basic type of phone. Interestingly, mobile phones were the most popular devices before smartphones became popular. However, KaiOS phones are not new to the market, they have completely changed the way they are. Today, this software offers users 3G, 4G, Wi-Fi and GPS connectivity, as well as access to some of the most popular apps, such as WhatsApp and Facebook.    

It is based on HTML5 and supports JavaScript, but it is not compatible with Android and iOS platforms. However, what makes KaiOS different is that it is a lightweight system, perfect for running faster on basic phones without much memory or processing power.    

Ubuntu Touch 

The Ubuntu Touch operating system is an open source operating system based on Ubuntu Linux. The program has a simple interface and offers the possibility of moving your desktop from your computer system to your smartphone at a low cost. Ubuntu Touch can be found on devices from the PinePhone, PineTab and FairPhone families.   

Harmony OS   

You may have heard of the Chinese brand Huawei. The mobile phone manufacturer has its own operating system, Harmony OS. The software has a design almost identical to Android and iOS, has an app store and is available in all countries. 

Apart from these, there are many other operating systems like GrapheneOS, LineageOS, Firefox OS, /e/, PureOS, Plasma Mobile, PostmarketOS, SailfishOS, Sirin OS and many more.
