Company must follow the decision, which aims to protect customer data.

iCloud is an Apple-branded feature that securely stores your phone's content, such as photos, videos, contacts, documents, passwords, apps and more, so that they are not lost.

The feature also allows this data to be shared with other people, as well as sharing the user's location. iCloud can be used by all users who have an Apple device, such as an iPhone, iPad or Mac, and have registered an account.

Find out all the details of the case

The woman was held hostage in her own home and had items stolen, including her cell phone and her iCloud account, which contains photos, videos, contacts, documents and personal data.

After the theft, the woman contacted the company, which gave her a fifteen-day deadline to block access to the account, preventing the fraudsters who had the cell phone from accessing it, and to return it to the real owner, who was being harmed. However, even after the promised period ended, the company did not fulfill its promise.

Meanwhile, the robbers continued to have access to all of the woman's information, including using WhatsApp and Instagram, where they were practicing blows, requesting money transfers from the victim’s friends and family.

What does the court's decision say?

In the preliminary injunction, Judge Debora Sarmento, of the 7th Civil Court of Rio de Janeiro, responsible for the case, considered that “the urgency of the request is unquestionable”, given the “nature of the information contained in the cloud, essential for managing both the plaintiff’s personal and professional life”.

As a result, Apple must comply with the decision and return the account to the victim and block access to the information to the scammers, who will no longer have access to the victim's information.
