Cell phone scam
The scammer's persuasion was enough, so the victim lost control of the device after following the woman's instructions and downloading the application from the website (security module) bb.weecly.com. The fraudster used Pix to make financial transactions from a real account worth around R$11,000 to an account in the name of Letícia da Silva Barros, then reset all the data on the device.
The victim received a call from the real number of the Banco do Brasil central office, reported the situation, canceled all cards and agreed to the service protocols. He then contacted the Military Police and filed a police report.
This situation shows how vulnerable cell phones are to scammers, so it is important to be vigilant and follow steps to make your device more secure.
Useful tips
Set a password on your line's chip
This will prevent it from connecting to another phone to receive SMS or calls. Also, keep the SIM recovery codes (PUK and PIN) in a safe place in case your chip is blocked.
Device and application updates
Devices and apps often provide updates that include new features and fixes for security vulnerabilities. It's important to always add more as they become available.
Do not click on links or open files from strangers
Messages from unknown sources may contain links or malicious files. Even if the topic seems important and your curiosity is great, choose to delete it instead of opening it.
Check app permissions
Many apps require a password to access your contacts, emails, photos, and other personal information that is not essential to the operation of the service. Be careful when enabling some permissions. It can result in a scam.
Do not save your password recovery email on your device
If your device is lost, stolen, or misplaced, this code can be easily accessed by criminals. This allows them to replace passwords for accounts, apps, and more.
Enable two-step verification
Set up two-step verification for all your bank accounts, apps, email accounts, and more. This makes it harder for scammers to access your accounts.
Use biometrics only on your cell phone
To use biometric authentication, you must unlock your device. Do not enable the feature to access your banking apps, as this will allow criminals to record new biometrics and automatically log into your account. Accessing these tools is more secure using your branch/account details and password.
