Telegram
Telegram was created as an instant messaging service for the general public in 2013. It only arrived in Russia, the home country of its developer, in 2017. Despite the delay in reaching Russians, the app has become one of the leaders in terms of number of users. In June 2022, its monthly reach reached 63.1% of the country's population over 12 years of age.
Last year, Telegram surpassed WhatsApp in terms of traffic volume and is expected to surpass its competitor in number of users later this year. The growth in the number of users is attributed to the blocking of the Instagram and Facebook apps in the country.
It is among the five most downloaded apps in the world, including in the US, after the suspension of the account with former President Donald Trump in 2021. Another reason for the app's growth was the change in WhatsApp's privacy policy, which can share user data with other apps from the company Meta. The Telegram, in turn, refuses to grant access to users' messages and data, even when requested by the government.
Although it was created as a messaging app, Telegram is now seen as a complete social network. In addition to chats, it has channels that function as communities, where users can subscribe to channels, follow posts, discuss them and react. Recently, WhatsApp also gained a similar feature, which is already available to users.
