The intersection of technology, social media, and artificial intelligence has created an exciting new player in the world of social media: the BeFake app. Combining concepts from the popular BeReal app with the latest AI technology, BeFake has taken the market by storm, raising an impressive $1.4T3 million to create an AI-enhanced social network.

Developed by Alias Technologies, an applied artificial intelligence company that uses multimodal systems and generative media to build social media applications, BeFake aims to provide a unique social networking experience. Alias Technologies was founded in 2021 by Kristen Garcia Dumont and Tracy Lane. Read on to learn more.

BeFake

Inspired by the success of the popular BeReal app with Gen Z, BeFake innovates by allowing users to personalize their photos using AI technology. Instead of sharing real moments, BeFake users take photos using the front and rear cameras. They then use AI to adjust them using built-in presets or personalized recommendations. The goal is to eliminate the pressure of social media.

Kristen Garcia Dumont, CEO of Alias Technologies, explained that the name of the app BeFake was chosen to challenge the current approach of social media where there is constant pressure to present the perfect image. He argues that even BeReal is not fully experienced, as users are only just beginning to manage their “real moments” on the platform. BeFake aims to allow users to express authenticity as well as genuine creativity. The app offers a variety of styles and location suggestions, from imaginary images to imaginary situations such as climbing to the summit of Mount Everest. Users can also provide their own suggestions to create unique images.

AI Strengths

One of BeFake’s main strengths is its speed. AI-powered changes are applied to photos within 30 seconds, often even less, within 10 seconds. Editing is fast, but users spend an average of at least 10 minutes per session, demonstrating user engagement and interest in AI-powered image creation.

The app has been gaining popularity since it launched on the App Store and Google Play in early August. The company did not provide exact download and user usage figures, but so far it has seen triple-digit growth each week.

Profit and subscriptions

BeFake monetizes through subscriptions that allow users to pay for the processing time required to create images with AI technology, outside the free period or with one or more publications per day. Subscriptions cost US$2.99 per week, US$9.99 per month or US$99.99 per year.

Given the founding team’s experience in the gaming industry, they are convinced that agility in adapting to changing consumer preferences will be key to BeFake’s long-term success. The app also demonstrates its ability to evolve quickly thanks to an agile development process similar to that used in the gaming industry. This allows the team to respond quickly to user needs and make adjustments as needed.
