Changes to Twitter have angered users, who are migrating to the new app.

Recent problems and changes in Twitter are leaving social media users unhappy. The network's owner, Elon Musk, has claimed that extreme data extraction and system manipulation have affected the platform.

As a result of these difficulties faced, Musk imposed some measures to deal with the issues and, in the process, has been irritating a large number of users who were looking for alternatives to the problems.

Among the controversial measures, the Twitter restricted both verified and unverified accounts to a limited number of reads per day and halted browsing access for non-account users. The network also faced a major outage last Monday, which resulted in the platform being unavailable for hours.

All of these issues have users looking for alternatives to Twitter. And with a rival app called Threads coming soon, the competition to be the main Twitter alternative is heating up.

In fact, another potential Twitter alternative that is climbing the Apple App Store charts is Spill.

Learn all about Spill

Spill is a Twitter-like microblogging platform that was created by former Twitter employees Alphonzo Terrell and DeVaris Brown, according to a report by the Washington Journal.

Terrel is the former global head of social and editorial content at Twitter. The app launched exclusively on the App Store last month and has been gaining popularity ever since. An Android version of the app is already in the works.

It was included in the list of the 100 most downloaded social media apps for the month, was the most downloaded social media app last Monday and the third most downloaded app on the App Store, which coincided with the outage affecting Twitter.

And while it does have a live feed for users to check out all the latest activity, like other social media platforms, it focuses more on visuals, making it easy to share photos, videos, and GIFs with text. Inspired by the phrase “spill the tea,” users can “spill” whatever they want on the platform.

How to join Spill?

Spill is currently invite-only as it is still in the testing phase. It is only available on Apple devices and those interested can join the waiting list on the website. Alternatively, those already on the platform can send an invite code for someone else to join the network. According to the company, more than 100,000 people have signed up for the platform in the last three days.

Twitter

Twitter was created in March 2006 by Jack Dorsey, Evan Williams and Biz Stone, in the United States, while working for a company called Odeo.

With its success, Twitter became an independent company in 2007, initially offering a space for publications of a maximum of 140 characters. But in 2017, after more than 10 years since its launch, the text limit was increased to 280 characters.

Over time, Twitter gained new functions and also began to feature Trending Topics, a space that allows users to discover the most talked about topics of the day, becoming a kind of thermometer for various areas.

As of 2022, the platform, which was acquired by billionaire Elon Musk, was available in 49 languages and had 229 million daily active users worldwide.

In Brazil, the network gained popularity in 2008, but only received a Portuguese version in 2009.
