Cell phones are revolutionary objects in the history of humanity. These devices represent a major step forward in the way people around the world use communications in their daily lives. So, of course, many may be curious and ask: what was the first telephone? How did it all come about?

That's why we've brought you an article to help clarify these doubts. It's worth noting that advances in this technology happened relatively quickly. It took just a few decades for us to get to the cell phones we see today. Scientists developed their research using the resources that existed at the time and also generated new ideas that we still have in our pockets today.

The world's first cell phone

THE cell phone idea dates back to the United States. In 1908, in the state of Kentucky, the first patent for a cordless telephone was registered. About three decades later, engineers at the operator AT&T developed designs that would serve as the basis for the creation of mobile devices.

This first device worked as a two-way radio, allowing communication between taxi drivers and emergency services. All this research led engineer Martin Cooper to present his revolutionary invention to the world on April 3, 1973: the Motorola Dynatac 8000X, the first commercially produced cell phone. It is for this reason that he is known as the “father of smartphones.”

The device was 25 cm long and 7 cm wide. It weighed 1 kg in total. Its battery life was around 40 minutes of use, 8 hours in standby mode and almost 10 hours of charging. In terms of functionality, the device could only send and receive calls.

And in Brazil?

The first cell phone to arrive in Brazil was also released by Motorola, but in 1990. The Motorola PT-550 was immediately nicknamed “brick”. This model offers users an external antenna on the top of the device. The aesthetics of the product are inverted style. At that time, the device was considered elegant and beautiful. Today, the market value of the device would cost approximately R$15 thousand. Compared to other markets around the world, although it took about 30 years to reach Brazil, this technology was a great success. Currently, our country currently has more than 242 million smartphones. In other words, today Brazil has more smartphones than people.

The era of touch screen

Another feature that has changed the way cell phones are configured today is the touchscreen. This technology has been applied to devices for the past 28 years, and it continues to this day. The first model of the touchscreen era was the IBM Simon. Although announced in 1992, this model was not released to the market until 1994, thanks to a partnership between IBM and BellSouth (now owned by AT&T).

The pioneer brought some relevant features, even current ones, such as providing a calculator, notepad and file manager. Another strong point of the device was its ability to send faxes. For those who don't know, this was a form of communication widely used in the past, in which users sent texts and images on a piece of paper through a telephone line.
