How does e-commerce taxation work?

E-commerce, like any other type of business, needs to pay its taxes. Some people don't even know that this type of business also pays taxes, and this can be a bit complex.

THE e-commerce It does bring several advantages if we compare it with common trade. However, all these advantages are linked to the trade itself because they are two different operations, and not in the legal sense of the business.

Someone who has an e-commerce business deals with as many responsibilities and duties as any owner of any other type of business, from obligations with employees to licenses, depending on what exactly that person sells.

If we stop to think about it, all the possible advantages of this type of business will depend on what the entrepreneur wants and needs. For example, if the person does not need a physical location or does not want a physical location, this is already considered an advantage, considering that they will not have to bear the expenses that a physical location requires to operate, and we know that there are many.

At the same time, if a person wants to have a physical place to work, e-commerce is no longer advantageous and is not suitable for them. This type of situation shows how much things can vary, since it will depend on the type of business that is sought.

As for the assumption of taxes, the same application follows. The e-commerce tax works exactly the same as for physical stores, and it is also recommended that professionals work to deal with it. accounting for ecommerce in order to make everything more transparent and error-free.

But after all, how do taxes work for each type of e-commerce? Let's talk about this and present an overview of the many types of digital commerce that exist in Brazil. Check it out!

MEI

Let's start with the most common type of business that currently exists. It is estimated that around 70% of all trades nationals are MEI. Therefore, it is extremely important to know how the tax works for this modality, mainly because many people who start a new business, start precisely through MEI, because it is a modality with some advantages. In fact, probably the greatest advantage of all is not having to pay some taxes.

MEI is a modality aimed at microentrepreneurs, and since they are people who have very limited profits, they will certainly need help and incentives.

This incentive comes through the exemption of practically all possible federal taxes, such as IRPJ, PIS, Cofins, IPI and CSLL.

Basically, a person who has an average income only needs to pay a monthly fee of 60 reais, which is the combination of several taxes, such as ISS, ICMS and INSS. The idea was to combine everything into a single payment slip, and in this way, in addition to the amount being reduced, the dynamics of making the payment are also simplified.

Simple National

Now let's talk about the second module, the one that serves small and medium-sized companies. Remember that small is different from micro, since in Simples Nacional, the annual profit limit is R$$4.8 million.

Therefore, it is natural to say that this modality will pay more taxes, and that unlike MEI, where the tax is set at R$60.00 every month, the tax paid in Simples Nacional will depend a lot on the amount collected as profit.

The taxes paid by these companies are: IRPJ, CSLL, PIS, COFINS, IPI, INSS, ICMS and ISS. However, all of this is condensed within a percentage of up to 19% of the revenue.

However, it is important to remember that all of this can also vary, as different segments of companies may have different rules, but this is the average.

Presumed Profit

Finally, let's talk about the giants, the companies that can have up to R$1.4T78 million in annual profit. We don't know exactly how many e-commerces reach this level, but if you are one of them, know that you are one of those who will pay taxes on this list, that is, PIS, COFINS, ICMS, IPI and ISS. These taxes are part of the taxes present in this type of company, which is charged between R$1.61T and R$321T of revenue, an amount that for many is considered high.

To make sure nothing is missed, there is also a plan for those gigantic companies that reach more than 78 million in revenue per year. In this case, the plan is called Real Profit.

Real Profit is not often mentioned because it is rarely used by e-commerces, considering that it would not be advantageous at all, and for this reason it does not appear prominently here.

In short, it is very important that every company, whether digital or not, keeps an eye on the taxes they need to pay to avoid any type of confusion or legal problems.

Therefore, if you have an e-commerce, you just need to understand what type of company you have and make sure you pay the taxes you owe.
