The North American giant has been gaining more space in the market. Check out what is behind Apple's growth.

Apple lost significant market share in the mobile phone market after peaking at the start of the coronavirus pandemic. But according to data released by Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) last Wednesday (18), the company showed signs of recovery throughout 2023.

According to the research, after 2 years of decline, iOS showed growth and reached a market share of 39%, thus regaining a large market share. Even though its position is still far from the rate of 46% recorded in 2020, the new percentage still exceeds the rates recorded in 2022 and 2019. Check out below what is the reason for Apple's recovery.

Apple lost ground after pandemic

The charts illustrate the rapid growth of iOS in 2020, a year in which demand for new electronic devices increased significantly as people began working remotely. From the start of the pandemic through 2022, Apple's operating system lost ground to rival platform Android.

Analysts note that there is a common perception that tech giants are dominating the US market, but this is just the brand, not the operating system. Apple is actually the most popular brand in the US, but Android tends to be the most widely used platform due to the variety of options available.

Smartphone manufacturers’ market share often changes depending on the speed of their launches. For example, Apple typically sees a surge in revenue in the last quarter of each year because that’s when it launches a new generation of iPhones. In 2023, September marks the launch of the iPhone 15.

Samsung, the world's largest cellphone manufacturer but the second largest in the United States, tends to record higher sales figures in the second and third quarters. This is the period in which the South Korean company presents its top-of-the-line S family of devices. In addition, it is during this period that the company brings out its foldable screen models from the "Galaxy Z”.

Teens prefer iOS

A recent survey by The Wall Street Journal found that teens in the United States view Android as an “old technology” used only by their parents. The percentage is surprising. 871% of teens said they prefer Android Apple cell phones, rather than Android devices like Samsung or Xiaomi. However, this situation only occurs in the US, where Apple dominates the market with 57% market share, compared to 43% for Android devices.

In Brazil, the scenario is quite different. Recent research indicates that the country has the highest proportion of Android phones compared to iOS. In total, 811% of users chose Google's operating system, while 181% chose Apple's. Despite their major differences, both systems dominate the mobile platform market. This phenomenon is currently being investigated by market regulators. The aim is to analyze possible abuses of power by Apple and Google.
