Pre-installed apps, known as bloatware, have been a nuisance for many users, as they consume device resources without providing any usefulness. Rahman identified that Android 14 can scan these apps during the first boot of the system, identifying those with “exported startup activity”. This identification allows these apps to be suspended until they are actually opened by the user, saving memory and battery.

While Android 14 is rolling out to compatible devices worldwide, this feature is not yet live.
Google plans to include this feature by default in the Android Open Source Project, but manufacturers will be able to opt out. They will also be free to keep their pre-installed apps whitelisted, allowing them to continue consuming the phone's resources.
Rahman points out that Google already keeps some of its own applications on the whitelist, ensuring the proper functioning of the system, such as automatic updates and data synchronization.
As a result, this discovery holds promise for combating bloatware. However, it remains to be seen how manufacturers will incorporate this feature into their devices.
