For those who use GPS a lot, it is important to know how to change the Waze voice when changing the language to Portuguese or even when the user wants to customize the audio in the navigation application for Android and iPhone (iOS).
By default, the app offers recordings in Brazilian Portuguese with female (Alessandra) and male (Mário) voices. However, users can make some adjustments, such as recording voice and activating only notifications or completely disabling the app's sounds. Read on to find out how.

How to change Waze voice to Portuguese
In Brazil, the app has two preset voices. Alessandra is a female voice that provides street names and more complete directions, while Mario is a male voice that provides simpler directions. However, users who want to change it can choose from several voices that include several languages and fun audios, from Portuguese to Japanese. - Access Waze’s settings. To do this, go to the menu in the top left corner. Then, click on the “Settings” option.
- On the Settings screen, tap “Voice & Sounds” (or just “Sounds”) and open Waze Voice.
- You can change the default voice of the app, including multiple languages. To do this, scroll down the page until you find the language you want. Brazilian Portuguese has multiple male and female voices.
- Click on the item you want to use and it will be used as a blue checkmark.
How to record voice in Waze
Users who want to fully customize the app can record their own voice or that of a friend in the app. The process is simple but laborious, as you need to record the various commands used along the way. This guide starts the same as the previous one, but takes you down a different path in the “Waze Voice” menu.
- Go to the menu in the top left corner.
- Then click on the “Settings” option.
- On the Settings screen, tap “Voice & Sound” and then open the “Waze Voice” option.
- Now tap “Record New Voice” and then check the “Got It” button to see a security warning explaining that the recording must be clear.
- Next, allow Waze to access your microphone (unless you've done this on your phone). The program will open a page with a list of many commands.
- Press the record button and speak the command that appears. The maximum time for each phrase is 6 seconds. You can change the track title at the top of the screen.
- Once you’ve entered the necessary commands, press “Save.” You can return to the previous screen to edit your post or share it with your friends.
Celebrity Voices
Many celebrities and personalities have become Waze announcers. Waze himself GPS application provides audio alerts related to seasons, movie showings, or people on social media. The voiceovers include common phrases that remind you of the person, the way they speak, and a personalized tone of voice. Some of the names honored include Cristina Aguilera, Sid from Ice Age, and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
How to change notification in Waze
Some people like detailed information with street names, how many meters are left to change, among others. Others prefer simpler location commands. That’s why Waze offers users several options. Learn how to change them below. In the “Speech & Sounds” menu, you can choose one of three options:
- “Off”: The app does not make any sounds and only guides the user with map images
- “Reminders only”: the app does not provide route guidance, it only reports events along the route, such as speed cameras, accidents and roadworks.
- “On”: The application will communicate all available information with the selected voice, taking into account that some voices will transmit the name of the road, while others will only say the necessary variations, such as “turn right”.
