Alternative sources

In a bad year financially, as cell phone sales fall, Samsung has been looking for alternatives to increase revenue from devices that are already in the hands of consumers. That is, with advertisements and, now, paid streaming of games in the cloud.

Announcement

The new Game Launcher, which has been in beta for a few months now, is expected to be announced this Thursday (5) at a conference held by the company with its investors. The service will be exclusive to Galaxy devices. Unlike other cloud gaming platforms, which typically focus on console and PC games, the company is targeting the mobile gaming market.

The company's strategy aims to recoup revenue lost due to restrictions on ad targeting that were implemented years ago. Samsung already operates the Gaming Hub game streaming app on its smart TVs, which bundles a number of streaming services including Amazon Luna and Nvidia GeForce Now.

As the Samsung Developer Conference approaches, more details about the new product are expected to be revealed. In the meantime, tech fans are eagerly awaiting the company's next steps.

Crisis at Samsung

After the Covid-19 pandemic, Samsung faced several problems and is still trying to recover. The company lost around 96% of its profits, causing billions in losses, and decided to cut production of memory chips, which are used in different devices, such as cell phones and computers.

The company, which is the largest manufacturer of these chips in the world, had to make the cut after a decline in global demand, which caused the price of the devices to fall. In addition, the company has also faced a drop in cell phone sales, as have other companies that are going through the same “tough time”. As a result, the company has invested in new models, to attract consumers' attention and try to increase sales, especially of premium cell phones, since the company's best-selling cell phones are entry-level and mid-range.

With that in mind, the company has decided to launch two foldable phones in July, hoping that things will improve. In addition, the company has been trying to find alternatives to increase its revenue, beyond “just” selling its smartphones. The launch of the cloud game streaming platform is an example of this.
