Have you ever imagined buying a smartphone for less than US$$ 4? At first, that was the promise of Ringing Bells, an Indian company, with the launch of Freedom 251 in 2016. Attractive Design, Unbelievable Price

First off, the Freedom 251 impressed with its specs. With a 4-inch display, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of expandable storage, and even cameras on both sides, it seemed like a bargain. After all, who wouldn’t want a full-featured Android device for such a low price?

Online reservations for the Freedom 251 began in February 2016. The company’s website was already struggling due to high traffic as it struggled to keep up with the overwhelming demand. Ringing Bells managed to accept 30,000 orders before closing reservations. However, excitement soon gave way to distrust.

Earlier, India’s Ministry of Telecommunications raised concerns about the device’s lack of BIS certification. This raised red flags about the legitimacy of the product. Over time, despite all the promises, Ringing Bells faced accusations of fraud, especially after complaints of unfulfilled orders and faulty devices.

The Truth Behind the Price

Further investigation revealed more: the Freedom 251’s design was suspiciously similar to that of the iPhone. Furthermore, there were indications that components were sourced from another manufacturer, Adcom. Many customers did not even receive a confirmation email after purchasing. MP Kirit Somaiya then described Ringing Bells as a “fake Ponzi scheme”.

Announcement

Ultimately, the Freedom 251 episode reminds us that in the world of technology, miraculous offers can hide complex realities. Although the smartphone promised to revolutionize the market, it ended up being a valuable reminder: if something seems too good to be true, it might be.
