Samsung wants to provide security updates for Galaxy phones for more than five years. The company plans to extend the support period currently available. The potential changes were revealed on Saturday by Shin-Chul Baik, head of the company's mobile experience security team.

In an interview with SamMobile, the executive explained that the Korean brand is “actively discussing” improving its smartphone update policy. The changes will not only meet the company’s goals, but will also comply with new European Union regulations. For those who don’t know, in the European Union, manufacturers will be required to provide security updates for their phones for at least five years starting in 2025, and the company is already doing so for some models.

What changes?

In short, this gives you more time to receive patches to protect your smartphone from the latest cyber threats. Interestingly, Samsung's plan to provide security updates over five years began gaining traction shortly after Google's announcement. Last week, Google confirmed that the new Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro will receive seven years of operating system and security updates.

Android Update

Speaking of which, Google is expected to offer even more system updates with the new Pixel generation, but Samsung has not commented on this possibility. Baik only mentioned security updates in the conversation, ignoring the possibility that the number of Android updates could change. Currently, the company offers four years of Android updates and at least five years of security updates for its premium Galaxy S series phones. The implementation of this policy began in early 2021.

The executive said Samsung updates more than 1 billion devices every month, and security patches for more than 150 models are sent monthly, quarterly or semi-annually, depending on the version. Baik also explained that the entire process involves customers from all over the world and requires a significant investment from the brand.
